02

Seeking a coven

Approaching a coven involves getting to know people, discussing expectations and understanding how that community lives the Tradition. Trust develops over time, with room for questions and informed decisions by everyone involved.

The resources below may help with this process.

A group bringing together seekers and initiates of the Gardnerian Tradition. It can help with finding contacts and offer guidance on verifying the membership of people or groups offering initiation in the Tradition.

Evaluating groups: Isaac Bonewits’ tool

The Advanced Bonewits’ Cult Danger Evaluation Frame proposes criteria for examining power relationships within religious groups and other organisations. The topics covered include control over members, access to information, personal autonomy, and the treatment of criticism and of people who wish to leave.

The tool can support reflection on a group’s actual behaviour. Its application involves subjective judgements and calls for attention to relationships as they are lived, beyond the statements made by its leaders.

03

The lived Tradition: voices and experiences

The accounts of initiates offer insight into different journeys within the Craft. Memories, reflections and conversations present experiences of learning, shared life and religious practice, situated in the lives of people and communities.
